First of all, we’re super excited about the upcoming release of a new online review oriented documentary called “Billion Dollar Bully”. The documentary’s main focus is on Yelp’s role in The Review Economy. The film is slated for release May 21st.
Is Yelp a Billion Dollar Bully?
For years, business owners have complained that Yelp‘s online review related business practices amount to extortion. Such stories tell of waves of negative online reviews. Those reviews had been mysteriously posted ahead of harassing phone calls from aggressive salesmen. Those salesmen called offering to clean up the business’ Yelp profiles, but only for a hefty fee. Statistics used like “one negative online review leads to a loss of 10 customers” made their sales pitches compelling. Although this may be true, Yelp has propelled to one of the most valuable companies in The Review Economy.
Besides negative online reviews and pressured sales calls, there are also reports of phony and misleading reviews on Yelp. In light of these experiences, business owners and those making review-based buying decisions are understandably concerned. The influence Yelp has over the rise and fall of local businesses is astronomical. As a result, some owners say they’ve been forced out of business. They claim it is because of Yelp‘s allegedly deceitful business practices.
Directed by Kaylie Milliken and produced by Prost Productions, Billion Dollar Bully explores stories of business owners and others affected by Yelp’s role in The Review Economy.

In conclusion, Billion Dollar Bully will surely provide deeper insight on how businesses are impacted by Yelp‘s allegedly misleading operations. While we’re all about everything review related, we admit we’d want to watch this even if we weren’t… the title in itself is attention grabbing. After all, whether we are consumers, review gurus, or businesses… we are all impacted by online reviews in one way or another. Will you be watching?
